Botella, Pablo

Dr. Pablo Botella (male): graduated in Pharmacy at the University of Valencia in 1988, received his PhD from the same university in 1993, and was awarded with honors in 1994. In 2003 he was selected as a Ramon y Cajal Researcher under the supervision of Prof. Avelino Corma at the ITQ, and in 2007 he was appointed as a CSIC Research Scientist at the ITQ.

He has been a Visiting Professor of the University of Vermont (VT, USA) in 2013. He coordinates the Nanomedicine Group at the ITQ, addressing medical nanoscale-structured material and devices for targeted delivery and controlled release of drugs and other biologically active agents. Special interest is dedicated to the development of organic-inorganic nanohybrid-based stimuli-responsive systems, as well as stable radioactive nanoparticles for enhancing diagnostic imaging. Also important in his research is the study of the immune reaction and protein corona formation after nanoparticle systemic administration, as well as its application to new cancer biomarker detection.

He has written more than 70 articles in high impact Scientific Journals and numerous presentations in congresses, with an “h-index” of 32 and is co-inventor of 10 patents, three of them related to a more environmentally benign industrial process currently used in a demonstration plant.

Concepción Heydorn, Patricia

Patricia Concepción Heydorn, did her PhD work under the supervision of Prof. Jose Manuel López Nieto on the synthesis, characterization and catalytic properties of vanadium containing aluminophosphate catalysts (1992-1996) at the Institute of Chemical Technology (ITQ). Between 1997-1998 she has worked as a postdoc in the Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max Planck Geselschaft Berlin under the supervision of Prof.Karge, and between 1998-1999 in the Institut für Physikalische Chemie, LMU, München under the supervision of Prof. Knözinger. In 1999 she returned to the ITQ, Valencia, Spain, achieving a permanent position as Tenured Scientist of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in 2002.

Her research area is focused on catalyst characterization under reaction conditions in order to develop structure-activity relationships. Systems of interest are supported metal nanoparticles, metal oxide catalyst and zeolites. The main spectroscopic tools used are infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy.

She is author of more than 40 publications and 3 patents on different aspects of inorganic, organic and material chemistry.

Corma, Avelino

Avelino Corma (Moncofar, Castellón, Spain 1951), Professor at the Institute of Chemical Technology (ITQ-CSIC-Polytechnical University of Valencia), has been carrying out research in heterogeneous catalysis in academia and in collaboration with companies for nearly 30 years. He has worked on fundamental aspects of acid-base and redox catalysis with the aim of understanding the nature of the active sites and reaction mechanisms. With these bases has developed catalysts that are being used commercially in several industrial processes.
He is an internationally recognized expert in solid acid and bifunctional catalysts for oil refining, petrochemistry and chemical process, especially in the synthesis and application of zeolite catalysts.

He has published more than 1400 research papers, and is inventor on more than 200 patents. Over 20 of those patents have been applied industrially in commercial processes ofcracking, desulfuration, isomerization, epoxidation, chemo selective oxidation of alcohols and chemoselective hidrogenations. Corma earned his BS in Chemistry at Valencia University, PhD at Madrid under direction of Prof. Antonio Cortes, and spent two years postdoc at Queen´s University.

Díaz Cabañas, Mª José

Dr. Maria Jose Díaz Cabañas studied Chemistry in the University of Valencia and, after some years working in the industry, she received his Ph.D. from the Universitat Politècnica de València (1999). She got a postdoctoral fellowship from Iberdrola (1999-2000) in the Institute of Chemical Technology (ITQ) with Professor Avelino Corma and later she continues working in the ITQ until 2003 when she reached a permanent position in the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). Since 2007 she works as Research Scientist in CSIC.

Her research is focused in chemistry in the area of synthesis of microporous materials as catalysts important to industry to develop new products and to improve oil refining. Her work includes the synthesis and characterization of microporous materials, mainly zeolites. Besides to participate in several projects, she has worked in collaboration with companies as ExxonMobil, BASF, TOTAL, IFP, Albemarle Catalysts and TOPSOE.
Her main working areas are:

– Synthesis and characterization of new microporous materials
– Development of High-Throughput techniques applied to the synthesis of zeolites
– Synthesis of microporous materials at room temperature in biomimetic conditions.

She has published 70 papers mainly in Journals of high impact factor, among whom stands out 3 papers in Nature and 1 in Science. Besides she is coauthor of 28 worldwide patents, some of them transferred to companies.

She is member of the Spanish Society of Catalysis (SECAT) and the American Chemical Society (ACS).

González Cardenete, Miguel Angel

Miguel Angel González Cardenete studied Chemistry at the University of Valencia, Spain, where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in 1995, a Master’s Degree (1997, Excellent) and finally a Doctorate in Chemistry (2001, Excellent Cum laude, PhD Extraordinary award). In his Doctorate under the supervision of Professors Manuel Arnó Giribet and Ramón José Zaragozá Cardells, he developed the synthesis of a variety of skeletons of terpenoid natural products and started collaborations to study their biological properties. Also, he joined the group of Prof. Gerald Pattenden at the University of Nottingham (UK) to study radical cascade reactions for obtaining polycyclic systems. At the end of the Doctorate, he went back to the Pattenden’s group as Postdoctoral researcher and worked on a project for the synthesis of one of the most potent antitumor agents known to date, the Phorboxazole A. Then, he made a Postdoctoral stay with a Fulbright fellowship in the group of Prof. Emmanuel A. Theodorakis at the University of California, San Diego (USA).

After three years of postdoctoral research abroad, he returned to Spain to work as “Ramón y Cajal” researcher at the University of Valencia, where he worked in two research lines, development of synthetic methodology and medicinal chemistry from natural compounds. There, he worked as Assistant Professor and senior researcher. In 2015, he got a position as tenured scientist at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and moved to the Institute of Chemical Technology.

Main lines of research:

  1. Sustainable synthesis of Natural Products, derivatives and analogues of pharmacological interest.
  2. Medicinal Chemistry

His research has led to more than 60 publications and conference communications and one patent.

Jordá Moret, José Luis

Jose Luis Jordá holds a PhD in Chemical Sciences and is a Tenured Scientist at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC).

Jose Luis obtained a degree in Chemical Sciences from the Universitat de València in 1996, receiving the Extraordinary Degree Award, and a PhD in Chemistry from the Universitat Politècnica de València in 2001 with the thesis entitled “Síntesis, caracterización y actividad catalítica en reacciones de oxidación selectiva de olefinas de materiales mesoporosos ordenados Ti-MCM-41”, directed by Prof. Fernando Rey at the Instituto de Tecnología Química (ITQ, UPV-CSIC). After two postdoctoral stays at the Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) with Prof. Jordi Rius and at the Laboratory of Crystalography (ETH-Zurich, Switzerland) with Prof. Lynne McCusker, Jose Luis returned to ITQ with an I3P postdoctoral contract in 2004, a Juan de la Cierva contract in 2005, and a position of Tenured Scientist of the CSIC since 2006.

Jose Luis is co-author of 66 articles published in high impact scientific journals, that have received more than 4700 citations, with an index h = 34. The publication list includes three articles in Science, two in Nature Materials and one in Nature, three scientific book chapters, the coordination of the book “Materiales porosos y de alta superficie” (2014), several international patents, and the participation in numerous national and international congresses, including several invited conferences.

The main lines of research are zeolite crystallography and structural studies by X-ray, electron and/or synchrotron radiation.

Jose Luis collaborates since 2006 as lecturer in the course “Characterization of Solid Catalysts” of the Master in Sustainable Chemistry of the Universitat Politècnica de València, taught at ITQ, and since 2015 is the director the CSIC Specialization Course about “Applied Laboratory Techniques”.

Jose Luis is responsible for the X-ray diffraction equipments at ITQ since 2008, for the social networks of the institute since 2013, member of the ITQ Communication Area since 2013, of the ITQ Scientific Dissemination Commission since 2014 and of the ITQ Equality Commission since 2018.

Lhiaubet, Virginie Lyria

Virginie Lhiaubet-Vallet graduated from the University Paul Sabatier (Toulouse, France); in 2001, she defended her Doctoral Thesis untitled “Mechanisms of DNA damage photosensitized by drugs derived from aromatic ketones” supervised by Nicole Paillous and Nadia Chouini-Lalanne. In 2001, she was granted with an Individual Marie Curie Fellowship to join Prof. M. A. Miranda’s group at the Institute of Chemical Technology (ITQ) as a postdoctoral researcher. In 2008, she obtained a ‘‘Ramón y Cajal’’ contract; and since 2016, she is a Tenured Scientist of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).

Her main research interests are:

  • Interaction between light and biomolecules (particularly DNA) to obtain information on the molecular processes responsible for photosensitivity and to design new photoprotection tools
  • Study of DNA photodamage formation and repair (such as thymine dimers)
  • Design of photocages based on prodrug/profilter systems to allow a controlled photorelease of photosensitizing drugs together with a solar filter acting as protecting shield

Her scientific career has been recognized internationally in 2007 by the “Young Investigator Award of the European Society for Photobiology”, an outstanding award given biennially by the society to a scientist under 35 years old. In addition, Dr. Lhiaubet has given 2 plenary lectures, 15 invited lectures and 14 oral communications. She has been PI of 7 projects, including national and international projects. She has been the supervisor of 4 theses and is currently supervising 2 others. She has also tutored 6 postdoctoral students and 9 short-stays of PhD or graduated students.

In addition, she is the author of 66 publications, being corresponding author of 19 of them. Since her doctoral thesis, her research has been centered on the study of DNA damage and photochemistry of drugs and biomolecules. Thus, she participated in central contributions such as (i) the reductive photocycloreversion of azetidines as a model of DNA repair by (6-4) photolyase (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2016, Chem. Eur. J. 2018) (ii) the discovery of the role of DNA lesions as intrinsic photosensitizer (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, ACS Chem. Biol. 2018), (iii) the study of np* higher excited states of thymine (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2013), (iv) establishing the energy of the excited triplet state of thymine in DNA (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2006), (v) demonstrating the stereoselective quenching of ketoprofen triplet excited state in the presence of thymine (J. Am. Chem. Llabrés i Xamena, Francesc X.

Francesc X. Llabrés i Xamena (Xesc) was born in Alaró (Mallorca). He received his PhD in Chemistry in 2000 from the University of the Balearic Islands (Spain) working with Prof. C. Otero in the synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of zeolites. After a 2-years post-doctoral stage at the University of Turin with Prof. A. Zecchina, a short stay as invited researcher at Polimeri Europa (ENI) in Novara, and one year at the University of Padua with Prof. G. Granozzi, he joined the group of Prof. A. Corma at the ITQ in 2004 as a Ramón y Cajal Fellow. In 2010 he was appointed as Tenured Scientist of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) at the ITQ.

His current research interests are in the preparation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and the study of their applications, including heterogeneous catalysis.

He has co-authored over 70 scientific papers, 6 patents, 5 book chapters, and has edited a book for the RSC Catalysis Series on the catalytic properties of MOFs.

With a h index of 40 and over 13000 citations, Xesc is a Highly Cited Researcher (among the top 1%) in the area of CHEMISTRY.

Among other prizes and recognitions, Xesc has been distinguished with the Alpha Gold award 2009 of the Spanish Ceramic and Glass Society and the Duran Farrell Award of Technological Research of the Technical University of Catalonia and Gas Natural Fenosa.

Prieto, Gonzalo

Dr. Gonzalo Prieto graduated in Chemical Engineering at the University of Oviedo (Spain) and obtained his PhD degree in 2010 at the Institute of Chemical Technology (ITQ in Valencia, Spain) under the guidance of Prof. Martinez. From 2010-2013 he conducted postdoctoral research in the de Jong(h) group at the Debye Institute for Nanomaterials Science, Utrecht University (The Netherlands), as part of the Center for Atomic-Level Catalyst Design research consortium of the US Department of Energy. After a short stay as visiting researcher in the Spivey group at Louisiana State University (USA), in fall 2013, he received an Alexander von Humboldt personal grant and joined the department of Heterogeneous Catalysis led by Prof. Schüth, at the Max Planck Institut für Kohlenforschung (MPI-KOFO, Mülheim, Germany) were he later obtained a Group Leader position. In 2017 he joined the ITQ as a Senior Tenured Researcher of the Spanish Research Council (equivalent to Assoc. Prof.).

His research activities encompass aspects of material synthesis, nanotechnology, tomographic imaging methods and reactivity assessment methods, jointly focused on the design and development of solid catalyst materials and processes for the conversion of unconventional carbon feedstocks into fuels and platform chemicals. Gonzalo has authored around 40 scientific articles and book chapters, with an average impact factor >10 (Thomson Reuters, January 2018), alongside 3 patents (2 of them transferred to industry), and has contributed >50 papers to scientific conferences/workshops and delivered ~20 invited lectures. He has participated in 15 research projects, being a Principal Investigator in 50% of them, and has supervised/currently supervises 5 PhD theses. Sabater Picot, Ma. José

Maria José Sabater is currently a scientific researcher at the Institute of Chemical Technology (UPV-CSIC), Valencia (Spain). She obtained her MSci and PhD degree in Organic Chemistry at the Universidad de Valencia (Spain). After completing her doctorate, she joined the group of Prof. Waldemar Adam at the Würzburg University (Germany) as a post doctoral fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, conducting photochemistry in confined spaces (1993-1994). Thereafter she moved to Poitiers University (France), with a post-doc fellowship from the European Union´s Human Capital and Mobility Program to join one of the world leaders in catalysis, Prof. Michel Guisnet (1995). Her research was focused on heterogeneous catalysis for fine chemicals.

In early 1996, she was awarded with a very competitive individual contract for research (Program for the Incorporation of Researchers and Technologists from the Ministry of Education and Science), which is a tenure track position (5 years) within the spanish research system. In 2002 she got a permanent position as scientific researcher at the Institute of Chemical Technology (UPV-CSIC). Since then she has adressed the discovery and design of novel multifunctional nanostructured solids for application as catalysts in fine chemical, pharmaceutical and environmental technologies. She is author of publications (including articles, conference proceedings and book chapters) on carbocationic chemistry, photochemistry, new materials and catalysis. On the applied side, she holds several international and national patents and licensed technologies.

Her current research interests include nanocatalysis and new materials.
