International Symposium Fundación Areces: “Graphenes: the materials of the XXIst Century”
Date: October 21st, 2015
Place: Valencia, Salón de Actos de la Escuela Superior de Ingenieros Industriales de la UPV
Organizers: Instituto de Tecnología Química UPV-CSIC, Universidad Politécnica de Valencia and Fundación Areces
The last years of the twentieth century has witnessed intense research in the preparation and study of the properties of new carbon allotropes that were unknown until recently. The list of new carbon nanoforms includes fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and finally diamond nanoparticles and graphenes. While plastics have been considered as one of the materials of the XXth century, the potential new applications of graphene and the possibility that offers this nanomaterial makes that graphenes are widely regarded as the material of the XXIst century.
The conference is aimed to present the basic science and technology of graphene. Thus, Prof. Guinea presents the current state of the art in the potential of graphene in microelectronics. Prof. Mullen has developed innovative synthetic strategies of graphene based on bottom-up. Prof. Su will present his research using graphene to promote reactions. Prof. Serp will introduce the use of graphene as support material of nanoparticles and the unique properties derived from this synergy. Prof. Nguyen discussed new properties that are available in plastics as a result of the introduction of graphene and related materials in its formulation. And, Dr. Charola will comment on the markets in which graphene is being used.
