CONFERENCIA: “2D materials and the tale of magnetism in flatland”
El próximo viernes 21 de julio, a las 12:00h, en el Salón de Actos del ITQ, el Dr. Efrén Navarro, del Instituto de Ciencia Molecular de la Universitat de València (ICMol), y ganador del Premio Valencia Idea 2013 en la categoría de Energía y Medio ambiente, impartirá la conferencia “2D materials and the tale of magnetism in flatland”

The properties of «2D graphite» as a zero-gap semiconductor were pointed out theoretically a very long time ago. In fact, early attempts to grow graphene on other single-crystal surfaces date back to the 1970s. However, over 30 years had to pass before the first experimental study of graphene’s unique electronic properties would turn Geim and Novoselov into Nobel laureates sparking the explosion of the field of 2D materials. The gold rush in flatland had begun. Soon followed the isolation of the first 2D semiconductor (single-layer molybdenum disulphide) and, shortly after, a plethora of atomically-thin heterostructures that resulted from the stacking of different single-layer materials ranging from insulating to metallic. A few years later, superconductivity also found its way down to flatland with the discovery of Ising pairing in the first 2D superconductor (niobium diselenide). However, one conspicuous absence was still missing in the 2D materials playground: a magnetic 2D material. In this talk I will present our recent discovery of th> first 2D magnet made out of a single layer of chromium triiodide. Our experiments also showcase the dramatic layer dependence of the magnetic properties in the 2D limit down to the monolayer. I will conclude by outlining the potential of van der Waals 2D magnets in both fundamental physics and technological applications in spintronics.
