Predoctoral contract position in heterogeneous catalysis

Offered

A 30-month predoctoral contract (with possible extension) at the Instituto de Tecnología Química (ITQ, UPV-CSIC).

The Institute

The Instituto de Tecnología Química (ITQ) is a joint research center of the Spanish Research Council (CSIC) and the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), located in the excellent and vibrant UPV Campus at the seaside in Valencia (Spain). It is an international reference center in the area of catalysis and new materials which hosts 33 staff scientists alongside more than 75 PhD and postdoctoral researchers and technical staff members, and holds the Severo Ochoa Excellence accreditation since the creation of this program in 2011, which recognizes and supports Spanish research institutions, from all scientific and technological areas, which demonstrate international scientific leadership through high-impact innovations. The institute has also a strong ties and long tradition of R&D and technology transfer activities with industrial partners. Visit the website for more information: http://itq.upv-csic.es/en/

The project

The project is supported as part of the funding program Scientific Excellence of Junior Researchers of the Regional Valencian government (SEJI/2018/011) and focuses on the design, synthesis and regio-selective functionalization of solid catalyst materials for processes of relevance in the valorization of carbon resources alternative to petroleum, such as (unconventional) natural gas or bio-syngas into platform chemicals. A central topic of the thesis will be the concept of tandem catalysis, a relevant process intensification strategy relying on the integration of two catalysts to effect sequential catalytic transformations in a single reactor. The ITQ is a multidisciplinary research institute which offers excellent working conditions, high-quality training in scientific, professional and soft skills as well as outstanding facilities to carry out the project.

Candidate qualifications

Candidates should hold a Master degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related discipline. Candidates with a prospective MSc thesis dissertation within the next few months will also be considered. The second step will include the generation of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) inside these supports. Finally, the student will evaluate their catalytic activity in processes related to P2G (methanation or Fischer Tropsch synthesis), using an oscillating magnetic field or light as heat source.

The project will be carried out in the ITQ, a multidisciplinary research institute that is an international reference center in the area of catalysis and new materials. It offers excellent working conditions and is equipped with all the facilities necessary to carry out the project.

Required qualifications and experience

Candidates should have a Master degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related discipline. Candidates that are in the process of their Master thesis defense in the next 3 months will also be considered.

Previous experience in synthesis of air and moisture sensitive compounds, material science techniques (TEM, HRTEM, XRD and XPS), organometallic chemistry, metal nanoparticles and/or catalysis would be highly appreciated but not mandatory. The candidate will work in a multidisciplinary and an international environment, thus good written and oral communication skills in English are necessary.

Conditions

PhD studentship to work on computational-chemistry studies applied to the synthesis of zeolite microporous materials

PhD position available to work at Instituto de Tecnología Química UPV-CSIC (Valencia, Spain).

ITQ (Instituto de Tecnologia Quimica, Valencia, Spain) offers a PhD studentship to work on computational-chemistry studies applied to the synthesis of zeolite microporous materials.

The development of computacional chemistry is largely dependent on the availability of appropriate software tools for the different tasks. The present PhD grant aims to develop software to improve the reliability of models that describe the synthesis of zeolites. Zeolites are a big family of crystalline microporous inorganic solids of alumino-silicate chemical composition. The use of organic molecules is crucial for the synthesis of zeolites so that, by shape-selective occlusion, the organic molecule templates the zeolite micropore and, to a large extent, directs the final zeolite structure obtained.

Knowledge of Linux and Fortran will be the most important requirement for the candidates.
Knowledge of physical chemistry and computational chemistry, as well as any computational/informatic skills will also be valuable.

Candidates are expected to have skills on: communication/exchange of ideas in seminars, taking an active role within the wider research group, prepare publications and present work at international conferences.

The present PhD will be funded within the Severo Ochoa Award of Excellence.
